Suicide, Self-Injury, and Eating Disorders

Nexus is deeply committed to protecting individuals from harm while fostering a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health challenges. We recognize that suicide, self-injury, and eating disorders are serious public health concerns that require careful handling. Our policies are informed by mental health experts, suicide prevention organizations, and eating disorder specialists to ensure our enforcement actions support individuals in distress rather than exacerbate their struggles.

While we strictly prohibit content that promotes, glorifies, or encourages suicide, self-harm, or disordered eating, we allow discussions that focus on raising awareness, recovery, and seeking support. We also recognize that many individuals share their experiences with these topics to foster understanding and healing. Our goal is to strike a balance between preventing harm and enabling meaningful discussions on these important issues.

Whenever individuals search for or post content related to suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders, Nexus provides resources and helpline information from local organizations to offer professional support and crisis intervention. In cases where an individual is at immediate risk, we may contact emergency services to ensure they receive assistance.

Prohibited Content:

To safeguard individuals from content that could encourage harmful behaviors, we remove material that promotes, coordinates, or instructs others on suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders. This includes:

  • Content that promotes, glorifies, or encourages self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders.

  • Graphic depictions of suicide attempts, self-injury, or disordered eating behaviors.

  • Content showing a person actively engaged in a suicide attempt or death by suicide.

  • Imagery emphasizing extreme thinness, such as depictions of ribs, collarbones, thigh gaps, hips, concave stomachs, or protruding bones, when associated with eating disorder-related language.

  • Instructions for drastic, unhealthy weight loss techniques, particularly when combined with terms associated with disordered eating.

  • Content that mocks, shames, or degrades individuals who have survived suicide attempts, self-harm, or eating disorders.

  • Body modification imagery (e.g., tattoos, piercings, scarification, self-flagellation) when presented in a self-harm or suicide context.

Handling Of Sensitive Content:

In certain cases, sensitive content related to self-harm, suicide, and eating disorders may be restricted or labeled rather than removed outright.

Age-Restricted Content (18+)

To prevent minors from exposure to distressing material, we apply warning screens and age restrictions on:

  • Photos or videos depicting assisted suicide/euthanasia within a medical setting.

Labeled Content With Sensitivity Warnings

Some content is permitted with cautionary labels to prevent triggering effects while allowing discussions about recovery and mental health awareness. This includes:

  • Images of older self-harm scars, healed wounds, or other non-graphic self-injury imagery when shared in a recovery or awareness-raising context.

  • Images of extreme thinness (e.g., ribs, collarbones, thigh gaps) when shared in a discussion about recovery.

These labels notify viewers that the content may be upsetting while allowing individuals to engage in conversations about healing and mental health.

Crisis Intervention And Resource Support:

Nexus actively directs individuals toward mental health resources and crisis support services when they engage with self-harm-related content. This includes:

  • Suicide prevention support for individuals expressing suicidal thoughts.

  • Guidance on assisted suicide and euthanasia for those discussing these topics.

  • Self-harm intervention resources for individuals at risk.

  • Eating disorder recovery assistance for those struggling with disordered eating behaviors.

  • Support for vague, potentially suicidal statements (including memes or stock images that suggest emotional distress, sadness, or depression).

If a user indicates a clear risk of imminent self-harm, Nexus may escalate the situation by notifying emergency services to provide immediate assistance.

Handling Of Suicide Notes And Confirmed Incidents:

In cases where a suicide note is posted, Nexus may remove the content when we receive confirmation of a suicide or attempt from one of the following sources:

  • Family members or legal representatives requesting content removal.

  • Verified reports from law enforcement, media, or government agencies.

  • Submissions through official suicide prevention contact forms.

Live Content And Crisis Response:

Experts recommend that if an individual announces a suicide attempt on a live stream, their content should remain accessible for as long as possible—up until the attempt itself begins. The longer they remain live, the greater the opportunity for friends, family, or viewers to intervene and contact emergency services.

However, Nexus immediately stops live content at the point where an individual transitions from expressing intent to actively attempting suicide or self-harm. In every instance, we take steps to connect the individual with support services and escalate intervention efforts where necessary.

Exceptions And Contextual Considerations:

Discussions about suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders are permitted when they serve:

  • Educational purposes, such as mental health awareness campaigns.

  • Journalistic reporting on suicide, self-harm, or eating disorder-related issues.

  • Personal recovery stories, where individuals share their experiences to encourage healing and support.

However, these discussions must be non-triggering, non-glorifying, and should not encourage others to engage in harmful behaviors.

Policy Enforcement And Monitoring:

Nexus enforces this policy through a combination of AI detection, user reports, and expert reviews. Our monitoring system:

  • Removes content that promotes or encourages self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders.

  • Restricts and labels sensitive content related to recovery or non-graphic self-injury discussions.

  • Provides mental health resources to individuals who engage with related topics.

  • Escalates high-risk situations to emergency responders when necessary.

Policy Amendments And Updates:

This policy is regularly updated based on the latest mental health research, expert recommendations, and evolving safety concerns. Changes take effect immediately upon posting.
