Reorganizing The Storage Room

Every home has a room, whether it be the garage, a basement closet, or a storage unit that is overflowing with all of the junk. It’s where you likely keep your Christmas tree, your kid’s old toys, mismatched furniture, and that mattress you can’t remember how you ended up with. Storage is a necessary part of every home, but there are more elegant ways of keeping things safe. The trick is reorganizing the storage room every now and again. I

Set Aside Some Time

It takes time. Reorganizing the storage room is no easy task. Heck, you can’t even lift half the boxes in there, much less put them in all in order. It’s going to take a few days, so be ready for it. And don’t try to do too much in one sitting. This can make you sloppy. Work a few hours a day, and you’ll be done in no time.

Get A Plan

Don’t go into the storage room randomly moving things around. Plan out your ideas and work efficiently. This will make the process a lot faster and a lot less painful. Everyone has their own methods of organization, but I recommend putting things in categories based on their use. It’s simple enough. Christmas decorations go together, furniture goes together, outdated exercise fads go together. Just remember that not everything fits neatly into a category; so don’t get too hung up on making sure everything has its perfect place. After all, you’re just storing it.

Clean Clean Clean

Storage rooms have a reputation for being dirty, dusty, and filled with things like cobwebs and dust bunnies. Break the mold -- literally. When reorganizing your storage room, take the time to pull everything out and wipe everything down. This will make the room more pleasant to walk around in, and also help protect your things

Box Label Stack

The best way to maximize your storage space is to stack things. This will ensure more floor space for walking and finding the things you need. If you don’t already have storage shelves, you can buy commercial ones, or you can even build your own. Simple two-by-fours and sheets of plywood can make excellent storage shelves. The important thing is that they’re sturdy. In order to stack things, they need to be flat. Put everything you can in boxes or plastic storage bins, that way you can stack them to the ceiling. But if the boxes aren’t clear you’re going to have trouble remembering what things are in which boxes. That’s why it’s crucial that you label everything. Grab a permanent marker and write it on every side of the box. That way you’ll always be able to see what you’re looking for.

Reorganizing your storage room can be a daunting task, but with these tips you’ll have no problem maintaining a neat and tidy place to keep your things. Just don’t get overwhelmed. Get a plan and set aside plenty of time to get the job done. Clean everything out, box it up, and label it. That’s all it takes!
