Moving Checklist
It's easy for people to forget to inform the right institutions and individuals about your residential move and any subsequent change of address.
Notifying individuals and organizations about your move is important to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any problems with mail or accounts.
Here is a list of institutions and people you should contact when you move.
Families And Friends
Your family and closest friends should be informed first that you are moving house. Not only will it give you an opportunity to ask for their help, but if you are moving long distances, it will allow you enough time to say goodbye and plan for new ways to keep in touch.
Current Employer
Unless you are moving to another branch of your company, notify your employer as soon as possible.
You will save time and be able to complete all paperwork without a hassle.
Your old boss will need to know your new address to send you tax information and insurance information at year's end.
Landlord
You should review the terms of your lease agreement to ensure you understand your rights and responsibilities as a tenant if you are living in a rental property. Your landlord will likely require you to inform them at least 30 days before you intend to move out.
A written notice must be prepared that clearly identifies your move-out date as well as your future address. A short description of the property's condition and a request for your security deposit back is also a good idea.
Postal Services
Moving to a new home should include a change of address with the United States Postal Service. This will save you countless headaches and inconveniences.
You can request a Change of Address Request to have your mail sent to your new address before updating your address with any individual companies.
This process can be completed online with services like 1StopMove.
Utilities
You must inform your service providers of your plans for relocation to avoid service lapses or past-due payments. For example, you can arrange for utilities to be disconnected at your old residence on moving day and then have them connected at your new residence when you move in.
You should contact the utility companies when you move: electricity, gas, and water.
DMV
You will need to transfer your driver's license and update your vehicle registration and insurance if you move to another state. This can take anywhere from 10 to 30 days, depending on where you live.
It is a good idea for you to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles office as soon as possible. They will need to know about your new address and provide all necessary information regarding completing the paperwork.
Government Agencies
When you move to another state, you should notify a number of government agencies. Make sure you update your address with the Social Security Administration or other relevant agencies.
The IRS
To mail your tax returns, fiscal notes, and other documents, the Internal Revenue Service will require your exact home address. You can simply print and mail the IRS' Change Of Address form shortly after you move.
Financial Institutions
You must keep your finances in order by updating your bank accounts, notifying stockbrokers, credit card companies, and other financial institutions about your new address shortly before or immediately following your move.
Insurance Companies
Insurance agencies that offer homeowners, life, and health insurance policies should have your current address. This is also true for any other individuals or organizations (such as your family lawyer) who may have had dealings with you or your family.
Educational And Medical Facilities
You will need to enroll your children at a new school, locate a new family doctor, and transfer all of your academic, medical, and prescription medication records. These are important tasks that you must tell your doctors, vets, and other healthcare providers about your move and the new address.
Clubs and Subscription Services
Last but not least, update your address with any professional, sports, or social clubs that you are involved. Also, notify the subscriber service department of any magazines and newspapers that you would like to receive at your new residence.
Some companies and institutions may require you to visit them in person to inform them about your relocation. However, most people can change their mailing address online or by simply calling. You can also notify people via e-mail, text messages, or social media announcements.
