Memorialization

At Nexus, we recognize the profound impact that the loss of a loved one has on family, friends, and the broader community. In an effort to create a space where memories can be preserved and loved ones can honor those who have passed, we offer the ability to memorialize accounts. This feature ensures that the profile remains as a tribute while also preventing unauthorized access, fraudulent activity, or potential misuse. The preservation of a digital presence can be an important part of the grieving and healing process, and we are committed to safeguarding these spaces with sensitivity and care.

Once an account is memorialized, the word "Remembering" appears above the individual’s name on their profile, signifying that it is now a digital memorial site. This ensures that the account remains unchanged, preserving the content as it was when the individual was still alive. To respect the choices made by the user before their passing, we strive to maintain the integrity of the profile and avoid making unnecessary modifications.

To further support those grieving, we have implemented additional features that allow for limited modifications under special circumstances. On Nexus, for example, users can designate a legacy contact—a trusted individual who will have limited management capabilities over the memorialized account. In specific cases, upon request from a legacy contact or a verified family member, we may review and modify certain aspects of an account to ensure that it remains a respectful space.

Requesting Memorialization of Accounts:

Friends and family members may request the memorialization of an account for a deceased loved one on our Nexus Platforms by providing the requisite information. This process is designed to ensure that accounts are appropriately managed and remain a meaningful place of remembrance. The following individuals are eligible to submit a request:

  • Nexus Connections: Those who were connected to the deceased individual and can confirm their passing.

  • Nexus Followers: Users who were actively engaged with the deceased’s content and wish to ensure the account is appropriately preserved.

  • Family Members with Proper Documentation: Immediate family members or legal representatives who can provide verifiable proof of their relationship to the deceased and supporting documentation confirming their passing.

Upon receiving a request, we conduct a thorough review to verify the validity of the claim and determine the appropriate course of action. This process helps prevent fraudulent claims while ensuring that the account remains a respectful space.

Content Removal and Adjustments for Victims of Tragic Events:

In cases where an individual has passed due to murder or suicide, we recognize the heightened sensitivity surrounding their digital presence. To prevent further distress to family and friends, we may remove certain types of content when requested by a verified family member or, in the case of Nexus, by the legacy contact of the deceased. The following types of content are eligible for removal from the deceased’s profile photo, cover photo, or recent timeline posts:

  • Content that directly references or discusses the deceased's passing in a way that may cause distress.

  • Praise or support for the death, disease, or harm suffered by the deceased.

  • Visual depictions of the object used in the individual’s death (such as weapons, medications, or other harmful items).

  • Imagery of the convicted or alleged perpetrator in the case of murder.

  • Relationship or friend status of the convicted or alleged murderer, when applicable.

These measures are taken to protect the dignity of the deceased and minimize the risk of further trauma for those mourning their loss.

Additional Considerations for Nexus Memorialized Accounts:

In addition to general memorialization requests, we allow certain changes to be made to a Nexus profile under specific circumstances when requested by an authorized representative of the deceased or, where applicable, by the legacy contact. These modifications include:

  • Removing Violating Comments: Typically, content violating our Community Standards requires the individual to self-report in order for us to take action. However, for memorialized accounts, we will review and remove comments deemed inappropriate, harmful, or harassing when reported by an authorized representative.

  • Adjusting Privacy Settings: If harmful content exists on a memorialized profile, we may change the deceased individual’s privacy settings from public to friends-only to limit exposure to potentially upsetting material.

  • Correcting Name Violations: If the name on the deceased’s profile violates our Authentic Name Policy, we may modify it accordingly. This ensures that the profile remains consistent with our community standards.

  • Restoring Friend or Follower Connections: In some cases, individuals may have been removed from the deceased’s friends or followers list after their passing. If necessary, we can reinstate these connections to ensure that loved ones remain part of the memorialized account.

A Commitment to Sensitivity and Privacy:

We recognize that grieving is a deeply personal experience, and we strive to approach these requests with the highest level of sensitivity, discretion, and respect. Our policies aim to provide a balance between preserving the digital legacy of the deceased and ensuring that their profile remains a comforting space for loved ones.
