Bullying and Harassment
Creating a safe and respectful environment is essential to ensuring that people can engage in meaningful conversations without fear of harassment or intimidation. Nexus is committed to protecting individuals from bullying, harassment, and online abuse in all its forms, including threats, intimidation, and malicious attacks. These behaviors can take many forms, from sharing personal information without consent to making degrading or defamatory comments about individuals. Our policies are designed to prevent harmful interactions while allowing open discussions that contribute to public debate and awareness.
We recognize that public figures and private individuals experience different levels of exposure, which is why our policy differentiates between the two. While public figures are subject to public scrutiny, they remain protected from severe harassment and direct threats, especially when they are intentionally tagged in content. Private individuals, including minors and those who do not voluntarily seek public attention, receive a higher level of protection, ensuring they are not subjected to demeaning or harmful commentary.
Context and intent matter when evaluating content. We allow discussions that expose or condemn bullying and harassment, and in certain instances, self-reporting is required to determine whether the targeted individual feels harassed. We also encourage users to take advantage of platform tools designed to block, mute, and report harassment.
Additionally, we provide resources such as the Bullying Prevention Hub, which offers guidance for teens, parents, and educators on handling bullying situations and fostering safe online interactions.
Universal Protections Against Bullying And Harassment:
Everyone is protected from severe and targeted forms of harassment, including unwanted contact, threats, and intimidation. The following types of content are strictly prohibited:
Repeated, unwanted contact that is persistent, sexually harassing, or directed at multiple individuals unsolicited.
Calls for self-harm or suicide directed at an individual or a group.
Attacks based on experiences of sexual violence or domestic abuse, including accusations that survivors are lying about their experiences.
Sexually derogatory statements, including claims about someone’s sexual activity, sexually explicit photoshopped images, and offensive terms related to sexual behavior.
Threats to expose private information, including home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and medical records.
Mocking individuals based on medical conditions, menstruation, or bodily functions in a degrading manner.
In addition, individuals—especially public figures—are protected from severe harassment that includes death threats, statements wishing harm or disease upon them, and targeted claims about sexually transmitted infections.
Heightened Protections For Minors, Private Individuals, And Limited-Scope Public Figures:
Bullying and harassment can have severe psychological impacts, particularly on minors and individuals who did not voluntarily seek public attention. Therefore, Nexus provides additional protections for:
Minors (under 18), regardless of their public status.
Private individuals who are not widely known or frequently covered in the news.
Limited-scope public figures, such as journalists, activists, or individuals who gained public attention through involuntary means.
These individuals are further protected from:
Unverified claims about their sexual activity unless related to criminal allegations against adults.
Content that sexualizes another adult, including suggestive photo edits and explicit descriptions.
Comparisons that dehumanize individuals by likening them to animals, bacteria, diseases, or inanimate objects perceived as inferior.
Rankings based on physical appearance or character traits.
Content that highlights, circles, or negatively emphasizes a person's physical characteristics.
Bullying content that degrades individuals who have been physically bullied (except in fight-sport contexts).
For minor public figures, these protections apply only when the individual is intentionally exposed to the content.
Additional Protections For Private Minors, Private Adults, And Involuntary Minor Public Figures:
Private minors, private adults, and minor involuntary public figures receive the highest level of protection. In addition to the restrictions mentioned above, they are also protected from:
Targeted profanity and cursing.
Speculative claims about their romantic relationships, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Statements advocating for their exclusion from communities or groups.
Negative character claims unless related to criminal allegations or business reviews against adults.
Expressions of contempt, disgust, or denial of their existence.
When self-reported, these individuals are further protected from:
First-person bullying, where content directly addresses them in an abusive manner.
Manipulated images that depict them in a negative or misleading way.
Comparisons to other individuals based on appearance.
Claims about their religious identity or accusations of blasphemy.
Comparisons to animals or insects unless culturally perceived as positive (e.g., "lion," "tiger").
Maximum Protections For Private Minors:
Minors receive the strictest protections due to their vulnerability to psychological and emotional harm. In addition to all previously mentioned protections, they are also safeguarded against:
Accusations of criminal behavior or illegal activity.
Videos or images of them being physically bullied, regardless of context.
Derogatory language related to female-gendered slurs.
Enforcement Of Protections In Groups, Events, And Messages:
Bullying and harassment do not only occur in public posts but also within groups, private messages, and event pages. The protections outlined in this policy extend to:
Unwanted Pages, Groups, and Events targeting individuals, which will be removed if reported by the targeted individual or an authorized representative.
Harassment in private messages or direct mentions, which will be reviewed and removed if confirmed by the recipient.
Content that explicitly calls for bullying or harassment, which will be removed when confirmed by the target.
Sexualized content targeting a public figure, which will be removed when the individual or an authorized representative reports it as unwanted.
Mass Harassment And Coordinated Attacks:
Nexus enforces strict policies against coordinated harassment campaigns that target individuals at heightened risk of offline harm. This includes:
Human rights defenders.
Minors.
Survivors of violent events or tragedies.
Opposition figures in at-risk regions during elections.
Election officials and government dissidents targeted due to their political status.
Ethnic and religious minorities in conflict zones.
Any instance of state-affiliated or adversarial networks engaging in mass harassment will result in account suspensions or permanent bans. Targeted harassment via private profiles, inbox messages, or public forums will not be tolerated.
Consequences For Violations:
Individuals who engage in bullying and harassment may face the following consequences:
Content removal for violating our policies.
Restricted account access for repeated offenses.
Permanent account bans for severe or persistent harassment.
Collaboration with law enforcement if harassment involves credible threats, doxxing, or coercion.
Exceptions And Contextual Considerations:
Content that exposes or condemns bullying and harassment is permitted, provided it does not inadvertently perpetuate harm. Discussions about public figures, activism, or legal accountability are allowed when they focus on critique rather than personal attacks.
Policy Amendments And Updates:
This policy is subject to revision based on evolving online safety concerns and legal standards. Changes take effect immediately upon posting.
