Human Exploitation
Nexus is committed to disrupting and preventing harm caused by human exploitation, including human trafficking and smuggling. These activities represent serious violations of human rights and deprive individuals of their liberty, autonomy, and dignity.
Human trafficking is defined as the act of coercing, deceiving, or forcing individuals into labor, sexual exploitation, or other involuntary activities for economic or material gain. It is a global crime that can affect people of any age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. Traffickers use fraud, violence, or psychological manipulation to exert control over their victims, making consent impossible.
While human trafficking and human smuggling are distinct crimes, they sometimes overlap. The United Nations defines human smuggling as the facilitation of illegal entry across international borders, usually for financial compensation. Unlike human trafficking, smuggling does not require coercion; however, it can still lead to exploitation, abuse, and trafficking when vulnerable individuals seeking safety or better opportunities are taken advantage of. Human smuggling is a crime against a state, while human trafficking is a crime against an individual.
While Nexus prohibits any content that facilitates, organizes, or promotes human exploitation, we recognize the importance of allowing discussions that condemn trafficking, raise awareness, or provide information on personal safety, border crossing, asylum-seeking, and escaping dangerous situations.
Prohibited Content And Activities
Nexus strictly prohibits content, activities, and interactions that facilitate, coordinate, or exploit individuals for financial or material gain.
Human Trafficking And Exploitation:
Content that recruits, facilitates, or enables the exploitation of people in any of the following ways is strictly prohibited:
Sex trafficking, which involves any form of commercial sexual activity with a minor or any commercial sexual activity with an adult when fraud, force, or coercion is involved.
The sale of children or any illegal adoption practices.
Orphanage trafficking and orphanage voluntourism, where children are exploited for financial gain under the guise of charity.
Forced marriage, including arranged marriages where individuals are coerced into unions against their will.
Labor exploitation, including bonded labor, where individuals are forced to work under debt bondage or abusive conditions.
Domestic servitude, where individuals are controlled, abused, or unpaid for domestic labor under exploitative circumstances.
Non-regenerative organ trafficking, where human organs are sold or trafficked outside the context of ethical, legal, and voluntary organ donation.
Forced criminal activity, such as forced begging or drug trafficking, where victims are coerced into committing illegal acts.
Recruitment of child soldiers, where minors are abducted, coerced, or manipulated into participating in armed conflicts.
Content that enables or financially benefits from commercial sexual activity through trafficking-related operations is also prohibited. This includes situations where a third-party actor profits from sex trafficking, coerced prostitution, or other exploitative commercial sex transactions.
Human Smuggling:
While human smuggling is distinct from human trafficking, it remains a serious issue, particularly when it results in exploitation or harm. Nexus does not allow:
Content that offers, promotes, or facilitates human smuggling services, including assistance with unauthorized border crossings for financial gain.
Content soliciting human smuggling services, such as posts seeking paid transport for illegal migration.
However, discussions about border crossing, seeking asylum, or navigating migration for safety, legal assistance, or humanitarian reasons are allowed.
Limited Exceptions And Contextual Considerations:
Certain types of content related to human trafficking and smuggling may be allowed when they serve an educational, advocacy, or journalistic purpose. This includes:
Content condemning human trafficking or smuggling.
Content raising awareness about the dangers, tactics, and impact of trafficking and exploitation.
News reports covering human trafficking cases, smuggling operations, or governmental responses.
In these cases, context and intent must be clear to distinguish between raising awareness and facilitating harm.
Enforcement Actions And Risk-Based Monitoring:
To strengthen enforcement, Nexus works with law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and trusted partners to identify and prevent human trafficking and exploitation.
We may remove content related to job offers if:
The job is advertised in a location known to be a high-risk region for labor exploitation.
The job posting is flagged by law enforcement, anti-trafficking organizations, or verified local sources as being potentially exploitative.
We actively monitor and disable accounts involved in human trafficking networks, smuggling operations, or related exploitative activities.
Technology And Prevention Measures:
To combat human exploitation effectively, Nexus utilizes:
Automated detection tools to identify and remove violating content.
Human review teams to assess suspicious activity and content.
Collaborations with international anti-trafficking organizations to improve enforcement efforts.
Policy Amendments And Updates:
This policy is subject to updates based on evolving laws, trafficking trends, and global safety concerns. Changes take effect immediately upon posting.
